Ben Chifley was born on the 22 of September at Bathurst,NSW and was the eldest of three boys. He was the son of a blacksmith from Irish,Roman Catholic decent. He was mostly raised by his grandfather for about nine years and was educated at Catholic Patrician Brothers school in Bathurst where he received basic education. As he got older he developed a love for reading but he still continued on evening classes. At the age on fifteen he left school and not being able to afford university. Ben was a normal Catholic and went to Church all his life.
FIRST JOB
Working at the railways was his first job and he was the youngest to achieve the position of being a first class train driver. Ben Chifley was fifteen when his first job started and at seventeen he became a railway cleaner. He also became a member of the engine drivers and was fired from his job from a railroad strike in1917. In 1909 he became a fireman shovelling coal into engines.
PARLIAMENT
Ben's first step into Parliament was in 1928 when he was first elected a labor Seat for Macquarie in Parliament on his second try. In that seat he was in general a supporter of James Scullin then in 1931 he bacame Minster of Defence. James Scullin's side lost at a general election to a landslide and Ben lost his seat in 1931. After an unsuccessful fight to win back Macquarie he had one more shot at it and got his seat back in 1940. Then in 1941 Ben became Treasurer of John Curtain's Labor government.
